Guitar Hero Celebrates 20 Years – How a Plastic Axe United Generations Among Rock Generations

It has been 20 years since the legendary game first launched across the Atlantic, giving everyday gamers the tools to feel like rock legends. Figuratively speaking, but try telling that someone who has mastered Free Bird’s lengthy instrumental break in front of an enthusiastic living-room audience.

Created by Harmonix, Guitar Hero gave players a guitar-shaped controller to match on-screen cues scrolling down the display synchronized to the music. Every sequence corresponded to specific notes, creating the feel of a genuine live show.

The studio previously experimented in the music genre before partnering with the publisher, later acquired by the gaming giant in 2006. Collaboratively, they established the foundations for a surprising billion-dollar series which made a remarkable impact on numerous musicians featured, showcasing decades-old bands to a new generation of gaming enthusiasts.

A former executive, former COO of Harmonix, remembers the initial budgetary hurdles of licensing the songs – despite the fact the first two games primarily featured rerecorded tracks.

“We reproduced every song since the dollar figure was so high,” he says. “Even with the necessary permissions alone, it was nearly impossible. We failed to secure acts such as legendary groups – the publisher had virtually no money, and our team was pretty convinced the project would flop. However, when the game became a hit, and record sales and radio play increased, all artists desired to participate.”

He continues: “Among the remarkable aspects was how many parents got in touch expressing gratitude for introducing their children to the music they loved. It became a multigenerational phenomenon.”

Classic Rock Finds Younger Fans

Irish blues-rock band one featured act had their track on the 2008 game the popular installment. Guitarist the artist remembers the way the game revived classic rock to the forefront: “The game provided a bigger, younger audience. Typically such music was seen as outdated material, but then when it was featured on the game and teenagers were finding it, suddenly it was cool. This validated it, and got rid of the ‘dad rock’ tag. It provided all our music a new life.”

At that time, the band's debut album was still not available stateside, so the game was a key medium for exposure for the band as they went on US tour supporting the rock giants. “Their crew had on the song on the tour bus, and several recognized us from Guitar Hero,” Mahon says.

Rock’s Heavyweight Spin-offs and Lasting Influence

Rock’s biggest acts soon took advantage of the game's success, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and others featuring in specialized spin-off titles centered around their music collections and associated stories, visuals and legendary status. In the case of, the Aerosmith edition, it was said to have made the band more money compared to their records. It sold more than half a million units upon release, and sales of Aerosmith’s music saw an increase of up to 40% during an era as the industry was already collapsing.

The series still motivates nimble-fingered dedication among its fans. Recently, an online personality achieved a remarkable feat of DragonForce’s the challenging track – an infamously tough power-metal song popularized through Guitar Hero – using a fan-made version, a freeware game with almost identical gameplay and extensive personalization features. The song is difficult enough on expert mode, not to mention played at double speed while hitting a single one of the thousands of cues. They claimed requiring months of practice of practice.

“Guitar Hero offers a, imaginary experience. If you play other games, that doesn’t mean you should use actual weapons and go to war,” says musician Herman Li.

DragonForce previously completed a successful tour when their hit appeared in the third game, but Li says it turned them into widely recognized. “I recall our distributors informing us that we were records were moving rapidly,” he shares. “Popularity surged when we next toured, and we performed just before top acts on the Mayhem festival.”

Indeed, the band's visibility from Guitar Hero proved so vast that it risked eclipsing all other the band has done. Recently, the track featured in a trailer for a major film. “Previously I thought otherwise, but I’ve made peace with it,” Li says. “Should you just hear one DragonForce song, it’s totally cool – everyone’s got a unique path in music and I’m glad we played a role of people’s lives”.

Enduring Legacy of a Plastic Guitar

Top-tier promotion, whether it’s for automobiles, apparel or games, goes further mere transactions – it inspires a desire. Did Guitar Hero harness this? “That’s exactly what our team aiming to achieve,” he confirms. “That thrill of performing as a rock star in the spotlight. From day one, the creators felt that humans have a natural human desire to make music, and their goal was to leverage innovation to allow people to do it”.

Most of Guitar Hero games came out in just a half-decade between 2005 and 2010, featuring derivative titles like the DJ version, complete with a turntable controller, and Band Hero. Subsequently, the publisher’s interest in plastic instruments waned, except for a short-lived revival in 2015.

Titles such as the fan project and Fortnite Festival have kept the community active, and there’s set to be a new product from the founders in development. Recently formed developers has entered work on its debut rhythm-based title. Original co-founders are participating in advisory roles. Are gamers ready to embrace a new entry following the classic?

“Our team believed those games could be like Madden where you can releases,” he remarks. “With abundant fresh tracks that it could be perennially popular, thus I remain optimistic. There’s no reason why it can’t persist for future fans.”
