The artist has donated the full amount of his twenty-five thousand pound award prize money to the trust for venues, which works to protect the Britain's small music venues.

Fender was awarded the cheque on 16 October as his third album the album was chosen as the outstanding release of the past year.

The musician has opted to hand the money over to the trust, in recognition of the essential function grassroots venues had in his initial steps.

"I personally wouldn't be doing my current career if it weren't for all the shows I performed around the region, and further afield, when I was just getting going," said Sam Fender. "These venues are legendary, but they are in difficulty."

Since the start of 2023, at least 150 of these spaces have shut down – about 16% of the whole industry in the UK.

In the last year, well-known musicians including the band Pulp, the group Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the Music Venues Trust in its attempts to keep the scene afloat, by applying a small levy to their ticket prices, which goes to help independent venues.

Fender also participated, collecting over £100k on his live tour to support 38 small stages across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The donation supported spaces that were confronting possible closure due to challenges caused by flooding, blazes and personal losses, as well as permit problems, legal disputes and noise complaints.

Some locations received funding support in improving amenities and gear that helped musicians and fans.

"The idea that revenue from concerts in big venues helps the smaller venues, where it begins for performers like me, is just logical," the star has said.

Fender is far from the only musician to contribute his Mercury Prize winnings to worthy causes.

Back when Pulp earned the award in the year 1996 for their record Different Class, frontman Cocker stated that the band would contribute their cash to the organization War Child.

During 2002, rapper and singer the artist divided her bounty between multiple organizations, such as the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"And I contributed a grand to Highgate Newtown, to their classes, because I practiced gymnastics when I was growing up and they required updated gear," she shared with the media.

In recent years, Ezra Collective gave their funds to the local youth club that developed their group, in addition to other grassroots music organisations.

And the 1994 recipients M People contributed their award to a charity for MS after a acquaintance was diagnosed the disease.

"The victory was ample," stated artist the singer. "The cash was the bonus but we could do without the cherry, because we had the main prize. So our victory affected somebody else's life."

In the past week, the MVT revealed it had protected several small stages in the South East, by transferring them to public stewardship.

The Joiners in that area and The Croft in that location were purchased under the public acquisition initiative, which is backed by Arts Council England and supporters who purchase "stakes" in the buildings.
